This week during a coaching session, one of my clients shared her ongoing struggle with managing "breaks" throughout the day. Whenever she felt the need to get up from her desk and stretch her legs, she found herself in the kitchen.

As a result of this habit, she is now 20 pounds heavier, very uncomfortable and extremely unhappy with herself.

Unfortunately this phenomenon is all too common among entrepreneurs who transition from the outside work world to working from home.

Home business presents challenges not normally experienced while working in the corporate or "outside" world and managing breaks is a big one.

When you work outside of the home, a break might be spent by a water cooler, in a lunchroom, or outside on a bench chatting with a co-worker. When you do spend your break in the company lunchroom, you seldom find a fully stocked fridge and cupboards chock full of food at your disposal.

When you work from home, your break locations aren't quite as extensive and because it's very unlikely you would spend this time sitting in a bedroom or talking to yourself in the bathroom mirror, the kitchen is the most logical destination.

How you spend your breaks at home requires a little creativity and A LOT of discipline. By giving yourself options, setting limits, and creating healthy habits, it won't take long for you to re-direct yourself when you find yourself drifting towards the kitchen.

Here are 7 simple options to get you started:

1. Grab your remote telephone, head outside for a lawn chair and call a friend. This not only addresses the "break" issue but also combats the feelings of isolation that often affect home-based business owners. The important thing to remember here is set limits for yourself. Institute a 15-minute break rule and enforce it, otherwise you can lose an entire afternoon.

Be sure that your family and friends know when your business hours are. Ask them to honor your schedule just as if you had to drive to an office job each day. If you are serious about your business, then your family and friends will be also.

Even with a schedule, you can be distracted, which slows your productivity. If having the television or radio on is slowing your work and making it harder to concentrate, then turn these distractions off.

Devote a specific area of your home for working on your business, preferably an office. Work in your work area until your schedule is fulfilled for the day. This way you will be less likely to be distracted by things happening in other parts of your home.

Set specific times to check your email. Don't be afraid to let some phone calls go to the answering machine, if you are on a time crunch to complete your work for the day.

Try to enjoy your home based business. Your business is the reason why you no longer have to deal with the stresses and negative aspects of working for a boss in an office job. Be positive and persistent, and you will achieve more and more success with your home business.

I’ve known people who were thinking about quitting their real world job and wanting to start their own online business on their home computers say, I just can’t wait to work just when I feel like working! Or, I really can’t wait until I am my own boss. Or even, It will be great when I don’t have to punch a time clock.

While it is true. You really can work your own set hours when you have a work at home job and not have to punch a time clock, the working only when you feel like it part is not a very good idea. I guess though how often you felt like working, and how long the feeling lasted I think would be the big question.

Here are some things you should think about when considering working at home:

1. When working out in the brick-and-mortar world you most likely worked at least 8 hours a day and 5 days a week, if you had a full time job. When you work from home you may work 10 hours a day or more in the beginning, and maybe even more than 5 days a week. If you expect to work less, you should keep your day job and work part time at home until your home business gets rolling and can supply you with good income.

2. While you really can set your own hours, it is a very good idea to set your work hours just as if you were punching a clock. Then you must have the discipline to really work those hours every day you set to work.

3. When you worked for a boss, you probably got a paycheck whether your actually accomplished anything or not. Working from a computer at home, if you don’t produce, you don’t get paid. It’s just that simple.

So you see working from home is not like a summer vacation from high school. You really can’t just do what you feel like when you feel like. That is, of course what you want to do is sit in front of your computer and work.

After, your business gets rolling you will then be able to cut back your hours and have the freedom you longed for when you quit your day job. And, believe me it is worth all the long hours you put in getting to the top of the hill and start riding the fun wave on the other side.

Show that you can be highly productive from home and you might just be allowed to telecommute more.

That is the catch, of course. It may be a long time before you are telecommuting as much as you would like.

Gas prices just keep going up. This has been going on for a while, but now many areas are breaking $4 a gallon - easily. It’s not a comfortable situation if you have a long commute.

And this is one of the most obvious ways that working outside the home has become more expensive. Many other prices have gone up as well.

I’ve come to realize that more and more people are getting serious about working at home, at least some of the time. They may only be able to telecommute a day or two a week, but the savings are obvious.

The challenge can be getting an employer to agree to let you telecommute. It’s not impossible if your job is suited to telecommuting, and many employers are feeling enough of a pinch from gas prices themselves that they may be more reasonable about it now than in the past.

This is why many others are looking at home business as an option. Most can be worked as you continue with your day job, so that you aren’t starting with no income whatsoever. You can find out if the business is going to be for you.

Starting a home business isn’t something you should do lightly. You should research your options and get several ideas for what you want to do. Then you can figure out which you want to focus on first.

Now that being said, not everyone is cut out to work from home successfully. You can do it just like I do, but you have to want it more each day and you have to stick to it like gum sticks to the bottom of your shoe! Never let go of your dream to be at home and to succeed.

Sometimes getting to success is painful. It requires change at some point. The phrase, "If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten," is very true. If you are not successful doing what you are currently doing then change is necessary and that may require some reflection on yourself and you may discover some painful truths. If you are strong enough to handle what comes from looking closely at yourself you will be successful!

Never imagine that you have arrived. You should be constantly changing and growing. What worked for you last year may not work this year, and what works for you today may not even work tomorrow. Be learning and growing daily. If someone asks you what you are currently reading or studying you should be able to share with confidence your latest find.

Habits are very powerful factors in our success. Maybe you procrastinate, or are critical of others. If you have habits that are not helping you toward success it is time to change them! Pick one habit and start with that one. For 30 days, focus on changing that one habit to a habit that will be productive and lead you toward success. You can develop new habits that will launch you toward your goals. You are not stuck just because this is the way you have always done things. If you want new results you need to take new actions.

To be truly successful you will also have to be productive. If you are working from home but spending much of your day surfing the internet or on the phone talking about working rather than working you are not being productive. You may feel like you spent your day working, but unless you are getting results from your actions, those actions are wasted.

This is not meant to be discouraging, but simply to point out that you can be just as successful as anyone else, but you have to be willing to do what they did to get there. So the questions to ask yourself are: "Am I willing to do whatever it takes to be successful, even if it is personally painful?" "Have I done something to better myself today?" "Have I looked carefully at myself and found one habit to work on changing?" "Have I been productive today or have I just been busy?" "If I was my boss would I pay me for today?" If you can honestly say that you are willing to change no matter how painful it is personally, you have done something to educate yourself each day, you have focused on changing one habit into something positive and you have been productive today then you are successful and you will be reaping the results for a long time to come.

Several years back when my kids were creeping up on the teen years and I started hearing more and more excuses for why things were not done, I realized that we all tend to make excuses for ourselves. They can be real and legitimate excuses sometimes, but they are all just excuses if we are not doing what must be done to get where we want to go. My main email address starts out with noexcuses. This reminds me every time I send an email that I should be focusing on what is important because excuses just won't get me there!

Old habits can be very hard to break but if you are serious about being successful you will take the necessary steps to break away from those old habits and make new lasting habits for success. "Mom Wars." You have no idea how much I hate that term. It sounds like we moms have nothing better to do than to fight about who's doing it right, stay at home or work outside the home moms.

I've never felt one was inherently superior to the other. There are advantages to each, and what's right for your family may not be right for mine. But a lot of people forget that.

I'd like to discuss my own reasons for being a stay at home mom first.

1. I get to be with my kids.

For just about any stay at home mom, this one comes first. It's fun to be there for everything, even if it gets exhausting at times. I have a son who loves to cling to me and a daughter who is quite independent. Both can drive me nuts and drain me some days, but I get to see it all.

2. I'm able to work from home.

This is an advantage that today's stay at home moms have over their predecessors. It's much, much easier to bring in an income from home than it used to be. You aren't all but limited to daycare or direct sales anymore. Some work regular jobs, but telecommute. Others run online businesses. Others choose more traditional routes to earn money.

The balance is tough, but doable for me. Doesn't work for everyone, though, and I know it.

So why would a mom choose to work outside the home?

1. The family needs the money.

We can argue all we want about what "needs the money" really means, and never do anything more than judge one another. I'm not going to go there because "needs" is something that can be very personally defined.

2. Mom loves her career.

Why would you leave a career you love? If you aren't the kind of mom who would enjoy being with her kids all the time, a career provides a sense of balance in your life. Women today generally aren't raised to expect to be at home all the time. We are raised with the expectation that we can do what we want with our lives and fulfill our own dreams.

Despite the many guilt trips others lay upon us.

And that's the catch. No matter which road we choose, someone wants to judge us. Stay at home moms are called lazy. If they work from home it's hard to be taken seriously (although things in that area are slowly improving for many!).

Moms who work outside the home are scolded for allowing someone else to raise their kids. They may be disadvantaged in their careers by the demands of motherhood.

It's much better to admit that most of us are just trying to do the best we can with what we've got. Each decision means a sacrifice of something else, whether it be a change or delay in your career, a decrease in the family's income or something else.

Sure, it's sometimes hard to talk to a mom who made a different choice. Your lives can be very different. But odds are you both made the decisions you felt were the right ones. Argue about who's the better mom and you're just making life harder for each other.

I really love that quote from Robert Schuller. Think about it ~ "tough times never last, but tough people do". This seems to have become my motto in life.

If you were to ask me if I'm tough, I would honestly have to say that sometimes I'm tougher than at other times. Are you "tough" when it comes to this crazy Internet business?

Whenever I think about past failures with my Internet business, I wince. I've failed so many times. People thought I was crazy to try a "home business" that promises overnight wealth. There were times when I thought I was crazy! It not only made me poor and miserable (because I'm an "opportunity junkie", when I first started out, I joined almost all the programs that came my way) but also frustrated. I spent countless hours, money and effort trying to make this business work.

I thank God that one day I managed to find the key to success on the Internet. Not only have I learned how to run my business so that it's simple to operate, but it brings me a good income so that I'll be able to retire comfortably. This is where toughness comes in. Even though I spent so much time and money on the affiliate business, working very late hours and seeing little return, I didn't give up! I don't consider quitting an option and I'm so glad! Back when times were tough, I told myself I couldn't quit because I hadn't yet achieved the goals that were so important to me.

Consider the value of a broadband connection. Your time is valuable and a broadband connection can allow you to get more done in a given time frame.

3. Schedule

Develop a schedule that works for you, your family (or "significant others"), and your business. When you allot a block of time for work then use that time for work. Equally important is to schedule time for your other commitments - family time, self education (reading, listening and viewing), "health time" (exercise, cooking and eating), and leisure time. During these other times don't work. After all, if one of the reasons to work from home is to spend more time with your family then you don't want your working at home time to consume your family time.

You are working for yourself, and your schedule (by your choice) is your "boss". When you have people calling you or dropping around unexpectedly or maybe out-of-town visitors may want to catch up with you, then you need to make a choice. 4. Describe Your Business

Be able to describe your business concisely; a powerful one or two sentence description that someone can repeat in describing your business to others. A unique and memorable tag line can also be invaluable for promoting your business.

5. Know Your Product or Service

Once you have selected your product or service to sell -- it may or may not be something that you use yourself -- you need to know your product intimately. If you are selling e-books, then know the content and its value. If you are selling software, then use it or know it "inside out". You will develop a reputation of providing quality information, and because of your product knowledge you can become the preferred supplier.

It is not practical to use certain products (for example a woman may choose to sell men's shoes or vice versa) in which case the seller won't be a product user, however the seller can still know the benefits and features of the product intimately.

6. Administration

Use good record keeping practices.

This may involve a consultation with a tax advisor who can let you know about the optimal way to set up your financial records and what records need to be kept. Additionally, obtain advice on the best arrangement for your bank accounts. You will most likely be advised to have a separate bank account.

Anyone who's ever been online should, by now, be aware of the hundreds of "work from home" internet based companies that are consistently advertised in various websites. One of the more popular is "doing surveys for cash."

There are literally hundreds of online survey companies. Most of them are not legitimate ways to make money, although a few of them can earn you a few bucks. These companies target stay at home moms who want to make a few extra dollars while taking care of the kids, the unemployed who want to make a few extra dollars while watching dozens of daytime court TV programs, the elderly who are not afraid to use the computer, and teenagers who think they know everything but aren't yet wise to the ways of the world. And let's not forget the very greedy people of low intelligence who think they can get rich by answering a few simple questions to which a five year old can respond.

These people are prey to unscrupulous methods used by some online survey companies. These scams include the following:

1. The fee for joining
There are some sites out there who charge a "fee" to join. They promise you an opportunity to earn up to $100,000 a year, sitting home at your computer taking surveys. The fee is usually less than $50. These sites are always a scam. If it was possible to earn $100,000 a year doing surveys online, the roads would be empty because no one would be going to work. Everyone would be home, in front of their computers, earning easy money. These sites prey on the greedy and / or lazy people of little intelligence. By the time they figure out that their "get rich quick" scheme isn't working, they're out $50. It's not a crime to be greedy, lazy or stupid. And, unfortunately, it isn't a crime to prey upon them in many cases. These sites are careful to add "disclaimers" stating that not everyone will earn this amount of money. They promise nothing, but include testimonials on their site from people with no last names who claim to be living the high life from the comfort of their homes. They usually have photos of flashy cars and huge houses on their websites. People need to stay away from these sites like they would avoid the bubonic plague. Unfortunately, PT Barnum was right when he said that there was a sucker born every minute. Which is why these sites continue to exist.

2. The cell phone scam
In this popular scam, you'll be asked for your cell phone number to "confirm" your membership. Seconds later, you will receive a call on your cell phone. The call will end up costing you anywhere from $1.95 to $4.95; depending on the company. These companies don't usually end up charging you too much because they figure you'll never miss a couple of bucks. But it adds up for them and that's how they make their money. They will then periodically send you text messages telling you that you've won a prize; and to claim it, you simply need to reply to the text. This will end up costing you more money. Do not give out your cell phone number to any website.

3. The Switcheroo
In this scam, you will be participating in a survey and then be directed to another website. They will ask you to show an "interest" in obtaining more information from one of their marketing partners. You will continue to answer "no" and keep getting more offers; the survey will never end until you answer "yes." Now this scam might not cost you any money, but it will cost you time. Because when you say that you are interested in learning more about health insurance, expect to receive an average of 10 calls a week from telemarketers trying to sell you health insurance. And the insurance they are trying to sell you is a lot more than you can expect to pay than if you contact an insurance agent in your area. I know this for a fact as I've actually done price researching. And the telemarketing company will ask you for both your social security number as well as your bank information (so they can send in a deposit with your application). It's dangerous to give out such information to anyone over the phone. Legitimate companies will send you any information you require by mail.

4. The phone bill scam
You'll sign up for a survey company and provide your telephone number. Then you'll proceed in completing a survey and receive an offer for a free issue of a magazine. You'll think to yourself - what's the harm? You'll give your name and address for the magazine and hardly notice when a fee for a year's subscription shows up on your telephone bill. If you read the fine print, however, you will see that when you provided the company with your name and address to receive your "free" magazine, you authorized them to bill you via your telephone bill. They figure that you won't even notice the extra $12.95 attached to your phone bill. And many people don't.

These are just four of the scams that I've actually encountered during my foray into the world of online survey participation. I consider myself a half-way intelligent person, but I got caught for $1.95 for the cell phone scam and $12.95 for the magazine subscription. I've also been called about 20 times so far by different "health insurance" company representatives who requested my social security number and bank information over the telephone. These companies have yet to send me anything by mail. Luckily, I know better than to give such information over the telephone.

Online survey taking can be fun, but be careful. Do not give out your cell phone number under any circumstances. Do not give out your social security number or bank information. Do not ever express any interest in receiving information from health insurance providers. And avoid the "online education" inquiries as well. Do some research prior to joining any company, do not pay a fee, and beware of anyone or any website that promises to make you rich.

One of the greatest obstacles work-from-home professionals face is self-discipline. There are days when just getting yourself motivated to sit down at your desk is difficult let alone sticking to your work schedule. As with any job, there will be days that you just don't feel like working. However, when you work from home, there's no boss watching to make sure you come in to work, so letting things slide can be all too easy.

Of course, sometimes sticking to your schedule is difficult because of family matters. You shouldn't expect yourself to be able to work efficiently and with determination at your dining room table. Instead, set aside a pleasant space that you can look forward to going to and leave behind when your work time is up. Your workspace will also need to be organized in a manner that lets you focus on your work and find everything you need to do it easily.

Although the challenges to working from home are great, there are challenges in traditional jobs that you're not likely to face in your home office. For example, you won't find any gossip going on around your water cooler and the family dog isn't likely to engage in office politics. And, if you need an hour off to go to school and have a surprise lunch with your child, you can do that.

In truth, the benefits of working from home probably far outweigh the challenges. And, if you take the time to really think about what you're doing and how you can improve your process, there are some very simple ways to overcome the obstacles.
